Armguards ($24.95 each)

The heart of Enshin Karate is Sabaki training with armguards at full speed and power.  Sabaki training with armguards allows students to execute techniques at full power in a realistic fighting situation without being injured.  Although heavy bag training is valuable, the ability to use full power against a mobile partner holding armguards greatly improves timing, rhythm, and footwork.  For the student holding armguards, this type of training develops a feel for contact and improves blocking technique.  By repeatedly seeing full-speed attacks from fighting position, you sharpen your eye and reduce reaction time.

Sabaki Brand armguards are designed with venting on the bottom to allow air to escape on impact.  They’re double stitched all the way around, top and bottom and the have reinforced strapping.

Heavy Bags ($175.00)

After armguards with partners, the heavy bag is the most useful training tool available.  The heavy bag enables you to combine full speed and power to develop timing and balance. The heavy bags are over 5 feet long.  You can practice your low and high kicks at the same time.

There is no substitute for bag training in the martial arts. The full-contact blows that can be delivered to canvas and leather is unparalleled. Bag training is a good way to develop timing, endurance, accuracy and power.
The timing aspect is enhanced during bag training as one visualizes their opponent, and begins to predict and respond to their techniques. Counter techniques involving sweeps, throws and punches become almost second nature. The repetitive motions create natural instincts that can be transferred to real fighting situations and/or tournaments. Also, as one progresses to more advanced techniques their stamina will improve steadily over time.

The recurrent punches and kicks demand a certain amount of endurance in order to deliver them effectively. Without proper conditioning there is little chance of becoming a good martial artist. The martial arts practitioner, who only practices techniques without involving endurance exercises, is like a basketball player who can make the shots, but is unable to run down the court for defense. They may be accurate, but they will only last a short while until they are virtually useless during the game.

Accuracy is also improved as consistent attacks and counterattacks are performed on the canvas or leather heavy bags. If one is focused enough to repeat these movements as they would be delivered during a real encounter they will surely become more precise over time. Furthermore, one's power will develop as one of the latter aspects in training.
Many people who begin training in the martial arts are very strong and can deliver punches and kicks with great force. Controlling their blows is very difficult but it is necessary. The ability to overpower an opponent is virtually useless if you are unable to know what you are doing and why. Learning why to do specific movements of the feet, legs, hips and upper body will create powerful and precise throws, sweeps, punches and kicks. These movements become more and more powerful when performed on a heavy bag at full speed with control.
Regardless of which martial arts you enjoy, it is very beneficial to incorporate bag training into your regimen. It allows you to develop specific skills that are needed during and encounter on the street, in the dojo, or on a tournament mat. The size and weight of the bag is up to you and should allow for reproduction of the techniques you utilizes during regular training.
